Meet de stars of Arcturus

Did you know? Arcturus is the brightest star in the Boötes constellation. And when our company was founded 25 years ago, the name Arcturus was, of course, not chosen by chance! At Arcturus, you can count on a stellar team that shines its light on complex risk environments for clients every day. We do this with a team of 28 professionals, always with great enthusiasm.

In our series “Sparkling questions for…”, we’d love to introduce you to members of our team. Kicking things off is Isa Widdershoven, junior actuary at Arcturus.

duurzaam

Can you introduce yourself in a few sentences?

I’m Isa, 24 years old, living in Waalwijk, and I have been working at Arcturus since 2022. That same year, I completed my studies in Econometrics and Operations Research in Maastricht. At the moment, I am following a course at the Actuarial Institute (EMAS), with just six months to go. In addition to studying in my free time, I also make time for one of my biggest hobbies: coffee. I really enjoy experimenting with it and creating beautiful latte art in my cappuccinos. I also love cooking and good food.

How did you end up at Arcturus?

I was already familiar with Arcturus through the Econometrics Days at university, and when I was looking for a graduation project, a friend recommended that I reach out to Arcturus. That turned out to be great advice, as it was a perfect match right away. After completing my thesis, I stayed on at Arcturus.

What does working as a junior actuary at Arcturus involve?

I work on various tasks related to Solvency II, pricing projects, and reporting. I contribute to model development and focus on client queries where they require more insight into their data. I really enjoy the variety of work, as it allows me to develop my skills in all aspects of the profession. Over time, you also start to see where your biggest interests lie—for example, I find pricing assignments particularly interesting to work on.

How do you continue learning and growing in your field??

I learn through my studies at the Actuarial Institute, by collaborating with colleagues, and through the diverse nature of my work. Additionally, we regularly have internal knowledge sessions where we are updated on current topics and discuss their implications and opportunities in our work.

What skills are essential for a junior actuary?

Three key skills immediately come to mind: analytical thinking, strong numerical ability, and the ability to simplify and translate complex problems.

Can you tell us more about Arcturus?

We work with around 25 colleagues daily on issues related to non-life insurance, investment policy, ALM, risk management, reinsurance, and capital calculations. I really like the atmosphere—it’s collegial, approachable, and personal. The communication lines are short, which makes it easy to coordinate or brainstorm ideas. Here, the doors are always open!

Do you do activities together as a team outside of work?

Yes, definitely! There is usually something organised every month, such as attending a concert or sporting event, playing sports and games, or having a barbecue. If you enjoy it, you can join in. It’s a great way to get to know your colleagues better. Additionally, once a year, there is a company-wide outing. Oh, and we also love going for lunchtime walks!
